Hi Everyone,

As some of you may be aware my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of last year. She went through all of the Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy you can shake a stick at and thankfully she came through it all. Obviously this was an extremely turbulent time for both mum and everyone around the family, however, my Mum would not have got through this without the continuing help and support that goes into breast cancer research every year. It is for this reason that a group of school friends and I are taking on the 3 peaks challenge on the 7th/8th of September to raise money for Cancer Research UK to support the fight against Breast Cancer.

For those who are not aware, the aim of the challenge is to walk up and down the tallest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scaffel Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) all in just 24 hours! Considering that for most of us exercise is limited to gentle strolls to the pub and the occasional half hearted jog to chase down a bus, this is going to be a rather large challenge.

Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK which has impacted the lives of millions of people, therefore any support, big or small, is really appreciated. Cancer Research UK is a fantastic organisation and the single largest funder of research into breast cancer in the UK.  If you could please donate using the below link it would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate that you receive a number of requests like this, however I doubt there are many of you who do not know of someone who has been affected by breast cancer and therefore ask that you please give generously.

Again, a big thanks for your support!

Richard

Dear members, players and friends,

In order to be best prepared for the approaching season I decided to take on a new physical challenge this year and applied to take part in the Ride Across Britain as part of my company team. I was lucky enough to be selected and although I am not doing the whole 960 miles in 9 days I will be doing 204 miles and 8605ft of climb from Manchester to Glasgow on Wed 12th & Thurs 13th  September. The route will take me through Wigan where I lived many years ago ( and have not returned to!) and then up 7 miles of Shap Fell before a lovely long downhill into Penrith where I get some food and rest before riding another 100 miles north the next day.  I really hope I manage to enjoy some of the beautiful scenery rather than just focussing on avoiding the wheel ahead of me and of course I am also hoping for fine weather, a gentle tailwind and no lasting damage to my undercarriage!

Our team of 30 are doing this for ‘fun’ but more importantly to raise money for the British Paralympic Association who are pivotal in  getting our Team GB athletes ready for the Paralympics and helping them deliver their lifetimes best performances  – if like myself you have been carried along on the wave of Olympic fever in the last couple of weeks you will have seen how much being a part of the London 2012 games means to every athlete and that winning a medal is often the pinnacle of their sporting careers. Earlier this year I was lucky enough to hear from Mandip Sehmi a member of the Paralympic GB wheelchair rugby team ( a particularly vicious sport!) and he told us how his life changed forever following a car accident at 19yrs old, how the BPA managed to get him interested in sport and nurtured his talent to elite level – this will be his third Paralympics.  I am also really pleased to have the opportunity to volunteer at the last pre-Paralympics training camp at the end of August where the athletes will make their final preparations and this will be a fascinating insight into what it takes to compete at this level.

The training requires commitment to the cause that I wouldn’t be able to do without Beefy & Oscar spending plenty of ‘quality time’ together while I get the miles in so please support us all and the British Paralympic Association by sponsoring me in my endeavours. This can be via my Just Giving page, cash, cheque or even by text!! Every little helps…

Further updates will follow to inform you of when your federation will make the changes

National Associations

Rules of Hockey

Based on recommendations from the FIH Rules Committee, the FIH Executive Board has agreed changes to the Rules of Hockey and the Rules of Indoor Hockey. These changes formally take effect from 1 January 2013. However, advance notice of the main changes is provided here so that Continental Federations and National Associations may, if they wish, implement the changes sooner for matches within their jurisdiction.

Changes to the Rules of Hockey (with reference to the numbered Rules in the 2011 edition) are as follows:

Rule 8.1: method of scoring. The way a goal is scored is amended; it now includes what is sometimes referred to as an “own goal”. That is, a goal can now be scored after the ball is touched in the circle by either an attacker or a defender. It is anticipated that the detailed text will read:

8.1 A goal is scored when:

a the ball is played by an attacker, or touches the stick or body of a defender, within the circle

b after either of these actions, the ball does not travel outside the circle before passing completely over the goal-line and under the cross-bar.

This is described as a “Mandatory Experimental Rule” so that it applies at all levels of hockey but, because it is a significant change, it will be monitored closely. After a period of review, the FIH Rules Committee will decide whether or not it becomes a permanent change to the Rules.

Rules 13.2.d and e: procedures for taking a free hit, centre pass and putting the ball back into play. The ball may now be raised intentionally and directly using a push, flick or scoop action; this action must be conducted safely. This is essentially an evolution of what is known as the “self-pass” from a free hit. By having the option to raise the ball immediately, opposing players will not have had the opportunity to get closer than five metres; a raised ball should be safer. It is anticipated that Rules 13.2 d and e will read:

d the ball is moved using a hit, push, flick or scoop

e the ball may be raised immediately using a push, flick or scoop but must not be raised intentionally using a hit.

All six athletes are important members of our respective first team squads and Stratford Hockey Club sends best wishes for further successes for these outstanding and talented players.

We have entered two teams into the Summer league, One playing in the Worcestershire league and the other in Warwickshire. Whilst the Worcestershire league might sound geographically worse, the irony is that there is v. little in it; the teams in that league being Evesham, Droitwich, Redditch, Stourport(vets) and Worcester.

Richard Stokes will captain the team in the Worcs league, aided by Sav

Oli Dix will lead the team in the Warks league aided by Simon Harrison.

The teams will be equally balanced and to this end we have divided those first teamers who have said that they would like to play between the two teams.

The league starts in the week commencing 14 May and there are ten games over a thirteen week period; we are having a selection meeting on Tues 8 May.

Please let the skippers know if you are interested in playing.

The contact details are:

The best thing about summer league is the lovely weather – so let’s do it!

Stratford Hockey Club ‘Purple Balls’ Dinner Dance was a great success raising over £2500 for both the National Autistic Society and the club itself.

It was the first time that the Hockey Club ran an event in partnership with a charity and was delighted to support Darren Oliver who is on a fundraising bonanza that culminated when Darren took on the iconic London Marathon in aid of autism.

Darren, whose 10-year-old son, Ryan, has autism, was also one of a few lucky hopefuls who got a sneak preview of the Olympic stadium and joined celebrities and other fundraisers in a once-in-a-lifetime run around the hotly anticipated new venue.

The event itself focused around an ‘Auction of Promises’ which saw the community of Stratford donate some wonderful prizes and England Hockey Board donating a signed Great Britain Hockey Shirt.

Darren said: “I was delighted at the turn out for ‘Purple Ball and overwhelmed by the support’ – over 100 people attended the event, which did wonders to raise awareness of autism. I felt incredibly proud to be able to tell all those who attended about Ryan and his tremendous achievements.”

“Running the marathon has felt like a life changing journey for me and I have relished all the exciting opportunities that have come with the challenge. I was lucky enough to take part in a run on the Olympic track, an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I would never have had without my marathon challenge. The day was brilliant giving me the opportunity to race for the charity made it all the more special.”

Vicki Guise organiser from the hockey club said “It was an amazing end of season celebration and the first time the hockey club have combined their annual dinner dance with a charity which made it even more special. A fun successful evening was had by all.”

Stratford Hockey Club and Darren would like to thank the local community for supporting the event with the next combined charity Dinner Dance planned for Saturday 3d November

Stratford Hockey Club’s Head Coach, Andy Hodges, was named Coach of the Year at Stratford District Council Sports Awards on Friday 2 March.

On a glittering celebration of local and community sport and in front of nearly 300 people, Andy picked up his award from former Olympian Adam Whitehead.

Andy joined Stratford Hockey Club 3 years ago and is now coaching the men’s and ladies 1st XIs and the clubs newly established academy.

Over the past 12 months Andy has coached the men’s 1st Team to their highest ever league finish, 4th in Midlands Division 1, only 16 places of National League.  This followed Andy coaching the men’s 1st Team to West Midlands Premier Champions the previous season.

With the ladies 1st team Andy has turned them from being relegation candidates to pushing for promotion within 2 years.  When he started coaching them halfway through a season, the ladies were staring relegation in the face.  Andy helped them avoid relegation and then finish 3rd last season and look too narrowly miss out for the title this season despite winning 15 out of 18 games.

Off the pitch Andy has also worked hard to bring in extra funds for the club through attracting key sponsors and running fundraising events.
