We have entered two teams into the Summer league, One playing in the Worcestershire league and the other in Warwickshire. Whilst the Worcestershire league might sound geographically worse, the irony is that there is v. little in it; the teams in that league being Evesham, Droitwich, Redditch, Stourport(vets) and Worcester.

Richard Stokes will captain the team in the Worcs league, aided by Sav

Oli Dix will lead the team in the Warks league aided by Simon Harrison.

The teams will be equally balanced and to this end we have divided those first teamers who have said that they would like to play between the two teams.

The league starts in the week commencing 14 May and there are ten games over a thirteen week period; we are having a selection meeting on Tues 8 May.

Please let the skippers know if you are interested in playing.

The best thing about summer league is the lovely weather – so let’s do it!

Stratford Hockey Club ‘Purple Balls’ Dinner Dance was a great success raising over £2500 for both the National Autistic Society and the club itself.

It was the first time that the Hockey Club ran an event in partnership with a charity and was delighted to support Darren Oliver who is on a fundraising bonanza that culminated when Darren took on the iconic London Marathon in aid of autism.

Darren, whose 10-year-old son, Ryan, has autism, was also one of a few lucky hopefuls who got a sneak preview of the Olympic stadium and joined celebrities and other fundraisers in a once-in-a-lifetime run around the hotly anticipated new venue.

The event itself focused around an ‘Auction of Promises’ which saw the community of Stratford donate some wonderful prizes and England Hockey Board donating a signed Great Britain Hockey Shirt.

Darren said: “I was delighted at the turn out for ‘Purple Ball and overwhelmed by the support’ – over 100 people attended the event, which did wonders to raise awareness of autism. I felt incredibly proud to be able to tell all those who attended about Ryan and his tremendous achievements.”

“Running the marathon has felt like a life changing journey for me and I have relished all the exciting opportunities that have come with the challenge. I was lucky enough to take part in a run on the Olympic track, an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I would never have had without my marathon challenge. The day was brilliant giving me the opportunity to race for the charity made it all the more special.”

Vicki Guise organiser from the hockey club said “It was an amazing end of season celebration and the first time the hockey club have combined their annual dinner dance with a charity which made it even more special. A fun successful evening was had by all.”

Stratford Hockey Club and Darren would like to thank the local community for supporting the event with the next combined charity Dinner Dance planned for Saturday 3d November

Stratford Hockey Club’s Head Coach, Andy Hodges, was named Coach of the Year at Stratford District Council Sports Awards on Friday 2 March.

On a glittering celebration of local and community sport and in front of nearly 300 people, Andy picked up his award from former Olympian Adam Whitehead.

Andy joined Stratford Hockey Club 3 years ago and is now coaching the men’s and ladies 1st XIs and the clubs newly established academy.

Over the past 12 months Andy has coached the men’s 1st Team to their highest ever league finish, 4th in Midlands Division 1, only 16 places of National League.  This followed Andy coaching the men’s 1st Team to West Midlands Premier Champions the previous season.

With the ladies 1st team Andy has turned them from being relegation candidates to pushing for promotion within 2 years.  When he started coaching them halfway through a season, the ladies were staring relegation in the face.  Andy helped them avoid relegation and then finish 3rd last season and look too narrowly miss out for the title this season despite winning 15 out of 18 games.

Off the pitch Andy has also worked hard to bring in extra funds for the club through attracting key sponsors and running fundraising events.
